Online Exams Overview

Online Exams are delivered via the Canvas Learning Management System.  This allows for faculty to administer assessments to students electronically.

Depending on circumstances, students may be able to take these electronic exams off campus using their own computer.  To maintain the integrity of the exam process, Sonoran University faculty may opt to deliver exams using Respondus LockDown Browser technology.

The process works as follows:

  1. A faculty member prepares and publishes an exam in Canvas.
  2. In Canvas, the exam is configured for administration via LockDown Browser.
  3. Students install the LockDown Browser product to their personal computer (that includes a webcam).
  4. Students use LockDown Browser to access navigate to Canvas, their course, and, finally, to their exam.
  5. LockDown Browser may prompt the student to sign an electronic consent, take a picture of his/her state ID.
  6. LockDown Browser may also prompt the student to rotate their computer to record their immediate surroundings.
  7. LockDown Browser will restrict the student computer from accessing any content other than the exam.
  8. LockDown Browser will record non-standard student activity (leaving camera view, reviewing notes, reviewing mobile phone, etc.) that might indicate access to prohibited content during an exam.  These video snippets can be reviewed by the faculty member for subsequent conversation and action.  Note:  Only suspicious activity is flagged for review.

Once student submits the exam, the LockDown Browser re-enables all normal function of the student's computer.

The LockDown Browser technology supports flexibility for the student (student can use his/her laptop) while also supporting the College's academic honesty policy.

Hardware/software requirements for LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser will run on Windows or Mac-based laptops or desktops having an internal or external webcam.  If your computer meets SCNM hardware/software minimum specifications, it will work with LockDown Browser.  You can check your computer and review specifications at:

Finally, when taking an online exam, students should follow these guidelines:

  • Select a location where you won't be interrupted.
  • Make sure you have a good Internet connection.
  • Select a quiet, well-lighted, and distraction-free environment to take the assessment.
  • Review your webcam image to ensure your face and work area is clear and well lit.
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it.
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc. and don't have them within reach.
  • Clear your area of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices.
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
  • Close all applications on your computer prior to taking the exam.
  • Start LockDown Browser on your computer and navigate to your exam in your Canvas course.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.
  • Life happens - you may have a pet, child, or other distraction enter your camera frame - just leave an audio note for your instructor while taking your exam by talking directly to your computer.  The audio will be recorded alongside your video.
